Some Key Insights from the SPTSA 2025 Conference
Dear SPTSA Members
I am writing to summarise the insightful presentations delivered under the 2025 theme: “Practical Theology Facing Digital (AI and ChatGPT) Revolutions in the Age of Homo-Digitalis.” The discussions brought together academics and church leaders to reflect on how Practical Theology can respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by rapid technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and the rise of the “homo-digitalis” — a term describing humanity’s evolution in an increasingly digitalised world.
Most presentations emphasised that humanity is experiencing a profound transformation, shaped by digital technologies. The concept of “homo-digitalis” recognises the shift in human identity and relationships due to ubiquitous connectivity, AI tools, and algorithm-driven decision-making. This evolution raises theological questions about how people find meaning, build community, and experience the divine in a digitally mediated existence.
Artificial intelligence, particularly tools like ChatGPT, was explored as both a potential disruptor and an enabler for theology. Speakers reflected on ethical implications, such as the role of AI in shaping human behavior, the biases embedded in algorithms, and the risks of dehumanisation. Conversely, AI was also presented as a tool for enhancing theological education, fostering digital discipleship, and broadening access to spiritual resources.
The presentations on practical theology in the age of AI and “homo-digitalis” provided a thought-provoking exploration of how theology can remain relevant and transformative amidst digital revolutions. By engaging with these challenges, faith communities can ensure that digital technologies are used to enhance, rather than diminish, human connection, spiritual growth, and the pursuit of justice.
Sincerely
